MSF warns as Darfur camp attack survivors face dire aid shortage

May 9, 2025
in Africa

Nearly a month has passed since the deadly attack on the Zamzam displacement camp in North Darfur, and the situation for the survivors remains dire. Tens of thousands of people are still stranded in Tawila, facing severe shortages of food, water, shelter, and medical supplies. The international community must act now to provide urgent assistance to these vulnerable individuals.

The Zamzam camp, located in the Tawila locality of North Darfur, is home to over 60,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) who have fled their homes due to conflict and violence. On October 3rd, the camp was attacked by armed men, resulting in the deaths of at least 15 people and leaving many others injured. The attack has left the camp in a state of chaos and despair, with many families losing their loved ones and their few possessions.

The survivors of the attack are now facing a new battle for survival. With their homes destroyed and their belongings looted, they have been left with nothing. The lack of food, water, and medical supplies is a major concern, as many of the IDPs are children, pregnant women, and elderly individuals who are particularly vulnerable to malnutrition and disease. The situation is made worse by the fact that the camp is located in a remote area, making it difficult for aid organizations to reach and provide assistance.

The shortage of food is a pressing issue, with many families going days without a proper meal. The little food that is available is often not enough to sustain them, and many are forced to rely on wild fruits and leaves for sustenance. This has resulted in malnutrition and other health problems, especially among children. The lack of clean water is also a major concern, as it increases the risk of waterborne diseases such as cholera and diarrhea.

The survivors are also in desperate need of shelter. The attack on the camp has left many families without a roof over their heads, forcing them to sleep in the open air. This not only exposes them to the elements but also puts them at risk of further attacks. The few makeshift shelters that have been set up are overcrowded and provide little protection from the harsh weather conditions.

The situation in Tawila is a humanitarian crisis that requires immediate attention. The survivors of the attack are in urgent need of food, water, shelter, and medical supplies. The international community must step up and provide the necessary assistance to alleviate their suffering. The United Nations and other aid organizations have already begun providing aid, but more needs to be done to ensure that all the survivors receive the help they need.

In addition to providing immediate relief, efforts must also be made to address the root causes of the conflict in Darfur. The ongoing violence and instability in the region have resulted in the displacement of millions of people, and until these issues are resolved, the cycle of suffering will continue. The international community must work together to find a lasting solution to the conflict and promote peace and stability in the region.

Despite the dire situation, there is still hope for the survivors of the Zamzam camp attack. The resilience and strength of the IDPs have been evident in the face of such adversity. They have come together to support each other and have shown incredible courage and determination to survive. It is now our responsibility to stand with them and provide the necessary support to help them rebuild their lives.

In conclusion, the survivors of the Zamzam camp attack in North Darfur are in urgent need of assistance. The shortage of food, water, shelter, and medical supplies is putting their lives at risk, and the international community must act now to provide the necessary aid. Let us come together and show our support for these vulnerable individuals and help them overcome this tragedy. With our collective efforts, we can make a positive difference in the lives of those affected by this crisis.
