Texas Gov. Greg Abbott Signs Bill Banning Taxpayer-Funded Abortion Travel

August 25, 2025
in Americas

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has once again taken a stand for the protection of innocent lives. On Tuesday, he signed a bill into law that will ban local governments from using taxpayer dollars to fund abortion travel out of state. This is a huge victory for the pro-life movement and a step towards ensuring that Texas remains a state that values the sanctity of life.

The new law, known as Senate Bill 22, prohibits any government entity from entering into a contract or providing funds to any organization that performs abortions or affiliates with abortion providers. This means that local governments will no longer be able to use taxpayer money to fund travel for individuals seeking abortions in other states. This is a significant step in the fight against abortion as it curtails a major source of financial support for abortion providers.

Gov. Abbott has been a staunch supporter of the pro-life movement and this latest move is a testament to his unwavering commitment to protecting the lives of the unborn. In a statement, the governor said, “The bill ensures no taxpayer dollars are used to aid the abortion industry. I am proud to sign this bill into law and continue my commitment to protecting the most vulnerable in our society.”

This law is a major blow to organizations such as Planned Parenthood, which heavily rely on government funding for their operations. By cutting off their access to taxpayer money, Texas is taking a stand against the abortion industry and sending a strong message that the state will not support the taking of innocent lives.

Furthermore, this law will also protect the conscience rights of taxpayers who may not want their hard-earned money to go towards funding abortions. It is a victory for all those who believe in the sanctity of life and do not want to be complicit in the taking of innocent lives.

The signing of this bill into law comes at a time when the abortion debate is at the forefront of national discourse. With several states passing extreme abortion laws, Texas is setting an example by standing up for the rights of the unborn. The state has always been a leader in the fight against abortion, and this law further solidifies its stance as a pro-life state.

Opponents of the bill argue that it restricts access to healthcare for women. However, this is not the case. The law does not ban women from seeking abortions, but simply ensures that their decision to do so does not receive financial support from taxpayers. Women still have the option to seek abortions in other states or pay for it themselves. This law simply ensures that taxpayers are not forced to fund a procedure that goes against their moral and ethical beliefs.

In addition to banning taxpayer-funded abortion travel, the bill also requires that cities and counties remove any contracts or leases with abortion providers by September 1st. This will further reduce the support for the abortion industry and send a strong message that the state of Texas will not tolerate the taking of innocent lives.

The signing of this bill into law has been met with praise from pro-life organizations and leaders. Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the Susan B. Anthony List, said, “Gov. Abbott and Texas lawmakers are taking bold steps to stop taxpayer funding of abortion and protect conscience rights. We thank them for their leadership and urge other states to follow suit.”

The fight against abortion is far from over, but this new law is a significant victory for the pro-life movement. It is a step towards creating a culture of life and protecting the most vulnerable members of our society. Gov. Abbott and the state of Texas should be commended for their unwavering commitment to defending the sanctity of life.

In conclusion, the signing of Senate Bill 22 into law is a major win for the pro-life movement and a testament to the leadership of Gov. Greg Abbott. By banning taxpayer-funded abortion travel, Texas is taking a stand against the abortion industry and sending a strong message that the state values the lives of the unborn. This law will protect the conscience rights of taxpayers and ensure that their money is not used to support a procedure that goes against their beliefs. It is a significant step towards building a culture of life and protecting the most vulnerable members of our society.
