Up to 3 million Afghans may return home this year: UN

July 12, 2025
in Asia

According to the United Nations refugee agency, up to three million Afghans are expected to return to their homeland this year. This massive influx of people is adding strain to an already dire humanitarian situation in Afghanistan. However, as daunting as this may seem, it also presents an opportunity for the country to rebuild and for the refugees to finally return to their roots.

For decades, Afghanistan has been plagued by conflict and instability, causing millions of its citizens to seek refuge in neighboring countries. But with recent peace talks and the withdrawal of foreign forces, there is a glimmer of hope for the country’s future. The return of Afghan refugees is a positive sign that the situation in the country is improving and that people have faith in the peace process.

The majority of Afghans seeking to return are families who have been living in Pakistan and Iran for years. They have faced numerous challenges in their host countries, including limited access to education, healthcare, and employment opportunities. Many have lived in overcrowded refugee camps, struggling to make ends meet. But now, as they prepare to return home, they are filled with a sense of hope and optimism.

The UN refugee official, Filippo Grandi, stressed the importance of ensuring a smooth and safe return for these individuals and families. He said, “The return of Afghan refugees must be accompanied by sustainable reintegration efforts to ensure they can rebuild their lives and contribute to the development of their country.” The international community has a crucial role to play in supporting Afghanistan’s efforts to reintegrate its returning citizens. This includes providing financial aid and technical assistance to create sustainable livelihoods and rebuild infrastructure.

The Afghan government has also recognized the significance of this situation and has taken steps to facilitate the return of its citizens. The Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation is working closely with the UN and other organizations to ensure a smooth transition for the refugees. This includes providing temporary shelters, basic necessities, and assistance with obtaining identification documents and finding employment.

The return of Afghan refugees also has a positive impact on the host countries. Pakistan and Iran have been generously hosting Afghan refugees for decades, but the strain on their resources has been immense. The return of these individuals will not only ease their burden but also strengthen the relationship between these countries and Afghanistan.

As Afghans begin to return to their homeland, there are undoubtedly challenges that lie ahead. The country is still facing security concerns and has a weak economy. But the return of its citizens brings with it a sense of resilience and determination to rebuild their shattered nation. It is an opportunity for them to be reunited with their families, reclaim their homes, and contribute to the rebuilding of their country.

The international community, as well as the Afghan government, must continue to support the returnees to ensure their successful reintegration. This includes providing access to education, healthcare, and creating job opportunities. It is also essential to address the underlying causes of displacement to prevent a future influx of refugees. This includes promoting peace and stability in the region and addressing socio-economic disparities.

In conclusion, the return of Afghan refugees is a significant milestone for the country and a testament to the progress made towards peace and stability. It is an opportunity for these individuals to finally return to their homeland and rebuild their lives. With the support of the international community, the Afghan government, and the resilience of its people, Afghanistan can look forward to a brighter future. Let us welcome back our Afghan brothers and sisters with open arms and work together towards a prosperous and peaceful country.
