UN expert slams US for lifting sanctions on Myanmar junta allies

July 31, 2025
in Asia

The United Nations’ Myanmar human rights expert has strongly denounced the recent decision by the United States to lift sanctions on allies of Myanmar’s ruling generals and their military-linked companies. This move has been met with widespread criticism and has raised serious concerns about the protection of human rights in the country.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the U.N. expert expressed his disappointment and dismay over the decision, stating that it sends the wrong message to the military junta and undermines the efforts to promote democracy and human rights in Myanmar. He also highlighted the fact that the military has a long history of gross human rights violations, including the persecution of ethnic minorities and the use of excessive force against peaceful protesters.

The decision to lift sanctions on the military-linked companies is particularly concerning as it will only serve to strengthen the economic power of the military and further entrench their hold on the country. This move goes against the U.N.’s calls for targeted sanctions on individuals and entities responsible for human rights abuses in Myanmar.

The U.N. expert also pointed out that the lifting of sanctions will have a detrimental impact on the ongoing efforts to establish a democratic and inclusive government in Myanmar. The military has been in power for decades and has consistently suppressed any attempts at democratic reform. With the economic support from the U.S., the military will have even more resources at their disposal to maintain their grip on power.

Furthermore, the decision to lift sanctions sends a message to the people of Myanmar that their struggle for democracy and human rights is not a priority for the international community. It undermines the sacrifices made by the people of Myanmar in their fight for a better future and gives legitimacy to a regime that has continuously violated their rights.

The U.N. expert also emphasized that the decision goes against the principles of the U.N. Charter, which calls for the promotion and protection of human rights for all individuals, without discrimination. By lifting sanctions on the military, the U.S. is essentially condoning their actions and sending a message that human rights violations will not be met with consequences.

In light of these developments, the U.N. expert has called on the U.S. government to reconsider their decision and to instead impose targeted sanctions on individuals and entities responsible for human rights abuses in Myanmar. This would send a strong message to the military that their actions will not be tolerated and would provide much-needed support to the people of Myanmar in their struggle for democracy and human rights.

It is imperative that the international community stands in solidarity with the people of Myanmar in their fight for a better future. The U.S. decision to lift sanctions on the military and their allies is a step in the wrong direction and goes against the values of democracy and human rights that the U.N. stands for.

The U.N. expert’s condemnation of this decision serves as a reminder that the protection of human rights should always be a top priority, and any actions that undermine this should be strongly opposed. The people of Myanmar deserve to live in a society where their rights and freedoms are respected, and it is the responsibility of the international community to support them in this pursuit.

In conclusion, the U.N.’s Myanmar human rights expert has made a powerful statement condemning the U.S. decision to lift sanctions on allies of Myanmar’s ruling generals and their military-linked companies. It is now up to the international community to take a stand against this decision and support the people of Myanmar in their fight for democracy and human rights. Only then can we hope to see a brighter future for the people of this beautiful country.
