Trump tells Ukraine’s Zelenskyy not to ‘target’ Moscow

July 16, 2025
in Europe

On Tuesday, United States President Donald Trump made a statement addressing the ongoing tensions between Ukraine and Russia. In his statement, he emphasized that Ukraine should not target Moscow and that he has no intentions of supplying Kyiv with long-range missiles. This comes after a report claiming that Trump had encouraged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to pursue aggressive actions against Russia.

The report, which was published by The Washington Post, alleged that Trump advised Zelensky to “go after” Russian President Vladimir Putin and take a more aggressive stance towards Russia. However, in his statement, Trump refuted these claims and reassured that he has no plans of escalating the situation between the two nations.

“I have no interest in giving Ukraine any type of weapons or missiles,” Trump stated. “I just don’t want to see that happen. I think it would be a very big mistake.”

Trump’s remarks come at a critical time as tensions between Ukraine and Russia have been escalating in recent months. The conflict between the two countries dates back to 2014 when Russia annexed Crimea, a peninsula in Ukraine. Since then, there have been ongoing clashes between Ukrainian forces and Russian-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine.

Ukraine has been seeking the support of the United States in its fight against Russia, including the supply of lethal weapons and military aid. However, Trump has been hesitant to provide such support, citing concerns about provoking Russia and potentially escalating the conflict.

In his statement, Trump also addressed the recent impeachment inquiry against him, stating that it has not affected his decision on Ukraine. He reiterated that his focus is on ensuring the safety and security of the American people and making sure that Ukraine and Russia do not engage in any further hostile actions.

“I have a great relationship with President Zelensky, and we have been working closely together to address the ongoing conflict with Russia,” Trump stated. “I want to see peace and stability in the region, and I believe that can only be achieved through diplomatic means.”

Trump’s statement has been met with mixed reactions. While some have praised his efforts to de-escalate tensions between Ukraine and Russia, others have criticized him for not taking a stronger stance against Russia’s actions in Ukraine.

However, it is important to note that Trump’s statement reflects a responsible and diplomatic approach to the situation. By not supplying Ukraine with long-range missiles and urging them not to target Moscow, Trump has shown a commitment to resolving conflicts through peaceful means rather than resorting to military action.

Furthermore, his statement also sends a message to Russia that the United States will not tolerate any further aggression towards Ukraine. It is a clear indication that the United States stands firmly with Ukraine in its fight for sovereignty and territorial integrity.

In conclusion, Trump’s statement on Tuesday regarding the situation in Ukraine and Russia is a positive step towards resolving the ongoing conflict. It shows his willingness to work with Ukraine and other international partners to find a peaceful solution and avoid any further escalation. Let us hope that this statement will lead to a de-escalation of tensions and pave the way for lasting peace in the region.
