Macron urges Israel to release Gaza aid boat activists amid protests

June 10, 2025
in Europe

French President Emmanuel Macron has called on Israel to immediately release activists, including climate change activist Greta Thunberg, who were detained after their aid boat was intercepted while en route to Gaza. The incident has sparked international outrage and raised concerns about the safety of humanitarian aid workers in the region.

The boat, named “Freedom for Gaza”, was carrying a group of activists from various countries, including Thunberg, to deliver medical supplies and other aid to the besieged Palestinian territory. However, it was intercepted by the Israeli navy on its way to Gaza and all those on board were detained.

In a statement released on Monday, President Macron expressed his deep concern over the detention of the activists and urged Israel to release them immediately. He also called for the safe and unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza.

The French President’s statement comes amid growing international pressure on Israel to end its blockade of Gaza, which has been in place since 2007. The blockade has severely restricted the movement of people and goods in and out of the territory, leading to a dire humanitarian situation.

President Macron’s call for the release of the activists, particularly Greta Thunberg, has been welcomed by human rights organizations and activists around the world. Thunberg, who rose to fame for her activism on climate change, has been a vocal advocate for the rights of Palestinians and has previously called for an end to the blockade of Gaza.

The detention of the activists has also drawn condemnation from the United Nations, with the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Tor Wennesland, calling for their immediate release and for the respect of the rights of humanitarian workers.

The interception of the aid boat and the detention of the activists has once again highlighted the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The territory, home to nearly two million people, has been under a strict blockade for over a decade, leading to a severe shortage of essential goods and services.

The situation has been exacerbated by the recent escalation of violence between Israel and Hamas, which has left hundreds dead and thousands injured. The destruction of vital infrastructure, including hospitals and schools, has further worsened the already dire situation in Gaza.

In his statement, President Macron also called for an immediate ceasefire and a return to negotiations between Israel and Palestine. He emphasized the need for a political solution to the conflict, stating that “the only way to achieve lasting peace and stability in the region is through dialogue and a just resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.”

The French President’s statement has been seen as a strong message to Israel to respect international law and the rights of humanitarian workers. It also highlights the growing global concern over the situation in Gaza and the need for immediate action to address the humanitarian crisis.

The detention of Greta Thunberg and other activists is a clear violation of their rights and the principles of humanitarianism. It is imperative that they are released without delay and allowed to continue their important work in delivering aid to those in need.

As the world continues to grapple with the devastating effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is more important than ever to ensure the safe and unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid to those in need. The international community must come together to pressure Israel to end its blockade of Gaza and allow for the free movement of people and goods.

In conclusion, President Macron’s call for the release of the activists detained by Israel is a strong message of solidarity and support for the people of Gaza. It is a reminder that the international community must take action to address the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region and work towards a just and lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
