Pollak: Democrats Teach David Hogg a Lesson in ‘Defending Democracy’

May 15, 2025
in Americas

In recent years, the Democratic party has positioned itself as the self-proclaimed “defenders of democracy” in the United States. They have painted themselves as the protectors of American values and institutions, standing up against what they see as the authoritarian tendencies of a patriarchal president. However, their actions and rhetoric have often fallen short of this lofty title, and their recent treatment of young activist David Hogg is a prime example of this.

David Hogg, a survivor of the tragic school shooting in Parkland, Florida, has become a vocal advocate for gun control and has been at the forefront of the movement for stricter gun laws. His passionate speeches and unwavering determination have made him a target for criticism and attacks from those who oppose his views. But what is truly disheartening is the way he has been treated by the very party that claims to champion democracy.

Recently, Hogg made a statement that sparked controversy among Democrats. He called for a boycott of certain companies that have ties to the National Rifle Association (NRA), a powerful lobbying group that advocates for gun rights. This statement did not sit well with some Democrats, who saw it as a threat to their own political interests. Instead of supporting Hogg’s right to free speech and his efforts to bring about change, they turned on him.

One of the most vocal critics of Hogg was Democratic Senator Chris Murphy, who accused him of “bullying” and “intimidating” companies. This is a shocking statement coming from a party that prides itself on standing up against bullying and intimidation tactics. Instead of applauding Hogg for using his voice and influence to bring attention to an important issue, they chose to attack him and undermine his efforts.

But the hypocrisy doesn’t end there. The Democratic party has also been quick to dismiss Hogg’s call for a boycott, claiming that it goes against the principles of democracy. They argue that it is undemocratic to try and silence the voices of those who hold different opinions. Yet, this is the same party that has been pushing for boycotts and sanctions against companies and individuals who support the current administration. It seems that their definition of democracy only applies when it suits their own agenda.

This treatment of Hogg by the Democratic party is not only disappointing, but it also undermines their claim of being the defenders of democracy. How can they claim to stand for democratic values when they are quick to silence and attack those who disagree with them? How can they claim to protect American institutions when they are willing to turn on their own citizens for speaking out?

It is time for the Democratic party to take a hard look at their actions and rhetoric. If they truly want to be the defenders of democracy, they must start by respecting the rights and opinions of all Americans, even those who may not align with their own beliefs. They must also be willing to hold themselves accountable and not shy away from criticism when they fall short of their own standards.

In the end, it is not about political parties or ideologies. It is about standing up for what is right and just. It is about protecting the voices of all Americans, regardless of their age, background, or beliefs. David Hogg may be young, but he has shown more courage and determination in his fight for change than many politicians have in their entire careers. It is time for the Democratic party to learn a lesson from him in truly defending democracy.
