South Sudan opposition MP claims Kiir’s govt is ‘mapping genocide’

in Africa

A South Sudan opposition lawmaker has made a shocking accusation against President Salva Kiir’s government, claiming that they are planning a potential genocide against the Nuer community. The Nuer community is known to be loyal to Kiir’s rival, Riek Machar.

The lawmaker, who wishes to remain anonymous for safety reasons, spoke out against the government’s alleged plans during a press conference on Sunday. He stated that the government has been systematically targeting the Nuer community, with the intention of wiping them out.

This accusation has caused an uproar in the country, with many calling for an immediate investigation into the matter. The Nuer community, who have already suffered greatly during the civil war, are now living in fear of another potential massacre.

The lawmaker presented evidence to support his claims, including reports of increased military presence in Nuer-dominated areas and the displacement of Nuer civilians from their homes. He also mentioned the recent arrest and detention of Nuer leaders and activists, further fueling the fear of a targeted attack.

The Nuer community has been a victim of violence and discrimination in South Sudan for many years. The civil war, which began in 2013, has largely been fought along ethnic lines, with the Nuer community being the main target of government forces. This has led to the displacement of thousands of Nuer people, who have been forced to flee their homes and seek refuge in neighboring countries.

The lawmaker’s accusation has shed light on the ongoing human rights violations and ethnic tensions in South Sudan. It has also raised concerns about the government’s commitment to the peace agreement signed in 2018, which aimed to end the civil war and promote reconciliation among different ethnic groups.

The international community has also expressed their concern over the potential genocide against the Nuer community. The United Nations has called for an immediate investigation into the matter and urged the government to protect all its citizens, regardless of their ethnicity.

In response to these allegations, the government has denied any plans of carrying out a genocide against the Nuer community. They have stated that the increased military presence is a precautionary measure to maintain peace and stability in the country.

However, the Nuer community remains skeptical and fears for their safety. They have called on the government to take immediate action to protect them and ensure that justice is served for the victims of the ongoing violence.

The accusation made by the opposition lawmaker has once again highlighted the need for unity and reconciliation in South Sudan. It is time for the government to put an end to the ethnic divisions and work towards building a peaceful and inclusive society for all its citizens.

The international community must also play a role in ensuring that the government fulfills its obligations under the peace agreement and protects the rights of all its citizens. The potential genocide against the Nuer community must be taken seriously and all necessary measures must be taken to prevent it from happening.

In conclusion, the accusation made by the South Sudan opposition lawmaker is a wake-up call for the government to take immediate action and address the ongoing human rights violations and ethnic tensions in the country. It is also a reminder for all of us to stand together and promote peace and unity in South Sudan. Let us not forget the lessons of the past and work towards a better future for all.
