Finland to keep border with Russia closed indefinitely

April 18, 2025
in Europe

Finland, one of the most peaceful and resilient countries in the world, has once again proven its commitment to protecting its citizens. On Wednesday, the government announced that its eastern border with neighboring Russia will remain closed until further notice. This decision comes as a necessary precaution to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and ensure the safety and well-being of its people.

Back in late 2023, Finland shut its land borders with Russia due to the rise of COVID-19 cases in the neighboring country. This decision was a difficult one, given the close relationship Finland shares with Russia. However, the Finnish government prioritized the health of its citizens and took the necessary measures to control the spread of the virus.

Since then, Finland has been closely monitoring the situation in Russia and consulting with health experts before making any decisions regarding the border. Despite the increasing pressure to reopen the border, the government has stood firm on its decision to keep it closed until it is safe to do so.

This decision has not come without challenges. The closed border has had a significant impact on the economy, especially in the regions that heavily rely on cross-border trade and tourism. But the Finnish government has taken steps to support these affected areas, providing financial aid and other resources to help them overcome this difficult time.

Many may question why Finland is not following the lead of its neighboring countries and reopening its borders. The answer is simple: the Finnish government puts the well-being of its citizens above anything else. While other countries may be reopening their borders, Finland understands the severity of the situation and the potential risks involved.

Moreover, Finland has managed to contain the virus within its borders, thanks to the strict measures implemented by the government and the cooperation of its citizens. The country has a low number of COVID-19 cases and has been successful in controlling the spread of the virus. Reopening the border too soon could jeopardize all the hard work and sacrifices made by the citizens.

It is also worth mentioning that Finland has maintained a strong relationship with Russia throughout this time. The two countries have been in constant communication and have worked together to control the spread of the virus. This decision to keep the border closed is not meant to create a rift between the two nations but rather a precautionary measure to protect both countries’ citizens.

In addition to the closed land border, Finland has also restricted all non-essential travel to and from Russia by air and sea. However, exemptions may be made for essential travel, such as medical reasons or for the transportation of goods.

As the world continues to fight against the pandemic, it is essential to acknowledge the efforts and sacrifices made by countries like Finland. The decision to keep the border closed is a testament to the government’s commitment to the health and safety of its citizens.

In conclusion, Finland’s decision to keep its eastern border with Russia closed until further notice is a responsible and necessary move. It is a reflection of the country’s strong leadership, dedication to its citizens, and its ability to prioritize the greater good. Let us continue to support and stand with Finland as it navigates through these challenging times.
