Moldovans hand pro-EU ruling party majority in pivotal polls

October 1, 2025
in Europe

Moldova’s pro-European ruling party, the Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS), has emerged victorious in the country’s recent parliamentary election, securing a decisive win over its Russia-leaning rival, the Socialist Party. The election results, announced on Monday, have given a major boost to Moldova’s aspirations of joining the European Union (EU) and solidifying its position as a key player in the region.

The PAS, led by Prime Minister Maia Sandu, won 52.8% of the vote, while the Socialist Party, headed by pro-Russian President Igor Dodon, received only 27.2%. This marks a significant shift in Moldova’s political landscape, as the PAS has gained a clear majority in parliament, allowing them to push forward with their pro-European agenda.

The election was seen as a crucial test for Moldova’s future direction, with the country facing economic challenges, corruption issues, and a divided political landscape. The PAS campaigned on a platform of anti-corruption and pro-EU policies, promising to bring about much-needed reforms and strengthen ties with the EU. On the other hand, the Socialist Party advocated for closer ties with Russia and criticized the current government’s pro-EU stance.

The resounding victory of the PAS is a clear indication of the Moldovan people’s desire for change and their belief in the party’s vision for a better future. The election results have also been hailed by the international community, with the EU and the United States congratulating the PAS on their win and expressing their support for Moldova’s European integration.

This victory for the PAS is a significant step towards Moldova’s goal of joining the EU. The party has been a strong advocate for closer ties with the EU, and with their majority in parliament, they now have the mandate to push forward with their pro-European agenda. This includes implementing much-needed reforms, tackling corruption, and strengthening democratic institutions.

Joining the EU has been a long-standing goal for Moldova, and the country has made significant progress in recent years. In 2014, Moldova signed an Association Agreement with the EU, which includes a Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DCFTA). This agreement has already brought about positive changes, with increased trade and investment between Moldova and the EU.

However, there is still much work to be done, and the PAS-led government is determined to continue on the path towards EU integration. This will not only bring economic benefits but also promote democracy, human rights, and the rule of law in Moldova.

The election results have also sent a strong message to Russia, which has been trying to maintain its influence in the region. Moldova has a complicated history with its neighbor, with a breakaway region, Transnistria, still under Russian control. However, the Moldovan people have made it clear that they want to move towards the EU and away from Russian influence.

The PAS victory has also been seen as a personal triumph for Prime Minister Sandu, who has been a vocal advocate for Moldova’s European integration. Sandu, who previously served as the country’s education minister, has been praised for her determination and commitment to bringing about positive change in Moldova.

In her victory speech, Sandu emphasized the need for unity and cooperation in moving the country forward. She also called on the international community to support Moldova in its efforts to join the EU, stating that “Moldova’s future is in Europe.”

The election results have given Moldova a renewed sense of hope and optimism for the future. The country has taken a decisive step towards its European aspirations, and with the PAS at the helm, there is a strong belief that Moldova will continue to make progress and become a prosperous and democratic nation.

In conclusion, the PAS’s victory in Moldova’s parliamentary election is a significant milestone for the country’s pro-European agenda. It is a clear indication of the Moldovan people’s desire for change and their belief in the party’s vision for a better future. With a strong mandate and a determined leader, Moldova is now well-positioned to continue on its path towards EU integration and become a key player in the region. The future looks bright for Moldova, and the international community stands ready to support the country in its journey towards a brighter and more prosperous future.
