32% of Ukrainians OK with concessions for peace with Russia

July 26, 2024
in Europe

Nearly a third of Ukrainians are now willing to make territorial concessions to Russia to quickly end the war, a significant increase from the past year, according to a recent survey. This shift in public opinion reflects the growing desire for peace and stability in the country, as well as the willingness to compromise for the greater good.

The survey, conducted by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, found that 31% of Ukrainians are now willing to make territorial concessions to Russia in order to end the ongoing conflict in the Donbass region. This is a significant increase from last year’s survey, which showed only 19% of Ukrainians in favor of such concessions.

This change in attitude is a reflection of the toll that the war has taken on the country. For over seven years, Ukraine has been embroiled in a conflict with Russia-backed separatists in the eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk. The ongoing violence has resulted in the deaths of over 13,000 people and has displaced millions from their homes.

The survey also revealed that while a majority of Ukrainians (57%) still oppose making territorial concessions, there is a growing understanding that a peaceful resolution is necessary for the country to move forward. This sentiment is echoed by President Volodymyr Zelensky, who has made ending the war a top priority of his administration.

In a recent address to the nation, President Zelensky stated, “We must do everything possible to end the war in Donbass. We must do it for the sake of our people, for the sake of our future.” This sentiment is shared by many Ukrainians who are tired of the ongoing conflict and its devastating effects on the country.

The willingness to make concessions also reflects a growing understanding of the realities on the ground. Despite Ukraine’s efforts to regain control of the Donbass region, it is clear that a military solution is not feasible. The conflict has reached a stalemate, and it is time for a diplomatic solution to be pursued.

Furthermore, the survey also showed that the majority of Ukrainians (61%) support the idea of a peacekeeping mission in the Donbass region. This is a positive development as it shows a desire for international involvement in resolving the conflict. A peacekeeping mission could provide the necessary security and stability for a lasting peace to be achieved.

It is important to note that making territorial concessions does not mean giving up on Ukraine’s sovereignty or its territorial integrity. It simply means finding a compromise that would allow for a peaceful resolution to the conflict. This could include granting a special status to the Donbass region or implementing a federal system that would give more autonomy to the eastern regions.

The survey also revealed that the majority of Ukrainians (68%) still view Russia as the main aggressor in the conflict. However, there is a growing understanding that a peaceful resolution cannot be achieved without some level of cooperation with Russia. This is evident in the recent prisoner exchange between Ukraine and Russia, which was seen as a positive step towards building trust and finding a resolution to the conflict.

In conclusion, the growing willingness of Ukrainians to make territorial concessions to Russia is a positive development that reflects the desire for peace and stability in the country. It is a sign of maturity and understanding that a peaceful resolution is necessary for the country to move forward. As President Zelensky stated, “We must do everything possible to end the war in Donbass.” It is time for all parties involved to come to the negotiating table and find a compromise that will bring an end to the conflict and bring lasting peace to Ukraine.
