Discover the Best of Edinburgh on a Walk Along the Royal Mile

Edinburgh, the capital city of Scotland, is a treasure trove of history, culture, and stunning architecture. And if you want to experience the essence of this beautiful city, there’s no better way than to take a leisurely stroll along the Royal Mile. This iconic route stretches between Edinburgh Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse, and is a must-visit for anyone looking to explore the highlights of Edinburgh while immersing themselves in its rich history.

As you walk along the Royal Mile, you’ll be transported back in time to the medieval era, with its cobbled streets, narrow alleys, and charming buildings. The Royal Mile is divided into four main sections, each with its own unique charm and attractions. Let’s take a closer look at what each section has to offer.

Castlehill
The first section of the Royal Mile is Castlehill, which starts at the gates of Edinburgh Castle. This section is home to some of the most iconic landmarks in the city, including the famous castle itself. As you make your way up Castlehill, you’ll be greeted by stunning views of the city and the surrounding countryside. Take your time to explore the castle and its many attractions, such as the Crown Jewels, the Great Hall, and the National War Museum.

As you continue your walk, you’ll come across the Scotch Whisky Experience, where you can learn about the history and production of Scotland’s national drink. And if you’re feeling adventurous, you can even take a tour and sample some of the finest whiskies in the country.

The Lawnmarket
The next section of the Royal Mile is the Lawnmarket, which was once the main marketplace of Edinburgh. Today, it is a bustling street filled with shops, restaurants, and pubs. This is the perfect place to stop for a bite to eat and to do some souvenir shopping. You’ll also find some interesting historical sites here, such as the John Knox House, which is the oldest surviving house in Edinburgh.

As you make your way down the Lawnmarket, you’ll come across St Giles’ Cathedral, a stunning Gothic church that is often referred to as the “Mother Church of Presbyterianism”. Take a moment to step inside and admire the beautiful stained glass windows and intricate architecture.

High Street
The third section of the Royal Mile is the High Street, also known as the “Royal Mile Proper”. This is the heart of the Royal Mile, and it’s where you’ll find some of the most iconic buildings and landmarks in Edinburgh. The most notable of these is the famous Heart of Midlothian, a heart-shaped mosaic on the pavement that marks the location of the old Tolbooth prison.

As you continue your walk, you’ll come across the Museum of Edinburgh, which offers a fascinating insight into the city’s past. You’ll also find the Writers’ Museum, dedicated to the lives and works of Scotland’s most famous literary figures, such as Robert Burns, Sir Walter Scott, and Robert Louis Stevenson.

Canongate
The final section of the Royal Mile is Canongate, which leads to the Palace of Holyroodhouse. This section is home to some of the most picturesque buildings in Edinburgh, including the Canongate Tolbooth, which now houses the People’s Story Museum. This museum offers a glimpse into the lives of ordinary people in Edinburgh throughout the centuries.

As you reach the end of the Royal Mile, you’ll come to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the official residence of the British monarch in Scotland. Take a tour of the palace and its beautiful gardens, and learn about its fascinating history.

In conclusion, a walk along the Royal Mile is a must-do for anyone visiting Edinburgh. It’s a journey through time, filled with historical landmarks, stunning architecture, and a vibrant atmosphere. So put on your walking shoes and discover the best of Edinburgh on this iconic route.
