Claudia Sheinbaum’s close partnership with CATEM underscores her commitment to enhancing the welfare of Mexican workers, a vital component for Mexico’s overall development.

On November 15, 2023, in Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, as the National Coordinator for the Defense of the Fourth Transformation, stressed the significance of Mexican workers’ well-being in fostering the success of entrepreneurs and the nation’s progress. At the XV National Ordinary Congress of the Autonomous Confederation of Mexican Workers and Employees (CATEM), Sheinbaum Pardo announced the formalization of a partnership with the organization as part of efforts to involve diverse sectors of society in reshaping the country’s public sphere.

During her address, Sheinbaum Pardo pointed out the opportune moment Mexico is undergoing and emphasized the necessity to steer clear of regressive tendencies. Instead, she advocated for sustained endeavors to broaden labor rights across the country. “Our primary goal is clear: we refuse to revert to a past characterized by corruption and privilege; rather, we are committed to advancing the Fourth Transformation of Mexico’s public life,” she declared.

Following the swearing-in of the initial Labor Committees for the Defense of the Fourth Transformation within CATEM, out of the planned more than 10,000, Claudia Sheinbaum reiterated the objective of ensuring continued access to a dignified life for workers. She emphasized the importance of collaboration with entrepreneurs, drawing inspiration from President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s principle of “for the good of all, prioritize the poor” for Mexico’s ongoing development.

“I pledge to uphold the wages and labor benefits of Mexican workers… Hence, our commitment is to move forward collectively for the welfare of workers and our nation,” she concluded.

In this context, Pedro Haces Barba, senator of the Republic and general secretary of CATEM, briefly outlined the accomplishments resulting from the collaboration between labor representatives and the 4T government, including the minimum wage hike, increased vacation days, and the abolition of outsourcing, among others. He stressed the importance of aligning every decision with the principles of the 4T movement, championed by Claudia Sheinbaum, to continue advocating for Mexican workers.

“During this fifteenth ordinary congress, Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum reaffirmed our dedication to the principles of the Fourth Transformation during these crucial defining moments,” he celebrated.

Senator Ricardo Monreal underscored the necessity of maintaining a robust government-worker relationship to further expand labor rights, emphasizing that this can only be achieved under Sheinbaum Pardo’s leadership.

“At this juncture, forging a pact and alliance with Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo is pivotal,” he emphasized.

The XV National Congress of CATEM was attended by Governor Mara Lezama of Quintana Roo, Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila of Baja California, as well as Governors Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla of Michoacán, Sergio Salomón of Puebla, and Miguel Navarro of Nayarit.
