Pakistan slams US decision to expand missile program sanctions

December 22, 2024
in Asia

Pakistan has once again found itself at the center of international controversy as the United States has decided to impose more sanctions on state-owned and private companies over Islamabad’s long-range ballistic program. The decision, which was announced on Thursday, has been met with strong condemnation from the Pakistani government.

In a statement released by the Foreign Office, Pakistan expressed its disappointment and concern over the US decision, calling it “unjustified and counterproductive”. The statement further stated that Pakistan has always maintained a responsible attitude towards its nuclear program and has taken all necessary measures to ensure its safety and security.

This latest move by the US comes as a surprise to many, as just a few months ago, Pakistan was praised by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for its strong commitment to nuclear safety and security. The IAEA had also acknowledged Pakistan’s efforts in strengthening its nuclear security infrastructure and its cooperation with the international community in this regard.

The US decision to impose sanctions on Pakistan’s ballistic program is not only unjustified but also goes against the spirit of cooperation and mutual respect between the two countries. Pakistan has been a key ally of the US in the fight against terrorism and has made significant sacrifices in this regard. The imposition of sanctions will only strain the already fragile relationship between the two nations.

Moreover, the US decision also ignores the fact that Pakistan’s nuclear program is solely for defensive purposes and is a deterrent against any potential aggression. Pakistan has always maintained a policy of minimum deterrence and has no intention of engaging in an arms race with any country. The sanctions imposed by the US will not only harm Pakistan’s security but also undermine regional stability.

It is also important to note that Pakistan’s nuclear program is in full compliance with all international laws and regulations. The country is a responsible nuclear state and has always adhered to its commitments under the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). The US decision to impose sanctions is not only baseless but also undermines the credibility of the NPT.

Pakistan has also been actively engaged in diplomatic efforts to promote peace and stability in the region. The country has played a crucial role in facilitating the peace process in Afghanistan and has been a key player in the fight against terrorism. The US decision to impose sanctions on Pakistan’s ballistic program will only hinder these efforts and create further tensions in the region.

The Pakistani government has called upon the US to reconsider its decision and engage in constructive dialogue to address any concerns it may have. Pakistan has always been open to dialogue and has shown its commitment to resolving issues through peaceful means. The imposition of sanctions will only serve to create further mistrust and hinder any chances of finding a peaceful resolution.

In conclusion, Pakistan strongly condemns the US decision to impose sanctions on its ballistic program. The move is not only unjustified but also goes against the spirit of cooperation and mutual respect between the two nations. Pakistan remains committed to its nuclear program for defensive purposes and will continue to work towards regional stability and peace. The government urges the US to reconsider its decision and engage in constructive dialogue to address any concerns it may have.
