Internet cuts leave Mozambique’s businesses in dark amid protests

Uber driver Rofino Fiel has been struggling to make a living in the midst of the ongoing post-election protests in Mozambique. The once bustling streets of Maputo have now become a battleground for political clashes, causing chaos and destruction. But for Rofino and many other drivers like him, the impact of these protests goes beyond the physical violence on the streets.

Rofino, who has been driving for Uber for the past three years, has seen a significant decline in business due to the protests. The roads are blocked, making it difficult for him to reach his passengers and complete his trips. This has resulted in a major loss of income for Rofino and his family.

But the financial strain is not the only challenge that Rofino and other drivers are facing. The constant fear of violence and unrest has made it difficult for them to operate their vehicles and ensure the safety of their passengers. Rofino shared, “I never know if I will be able to complete my trip or if I will be caught in the middle of a clash. It’s a constant state of uncertainty and fear.”

The situation has become so dire that Rofino is now considering quitting his job as an Uber driver. “I can’t risk my life and my livelihood every day. It’s just not worth it anymore,” he said with a heavy heart.

The protests, which erupted after the recent presidential election in Mozambique, have caused widespread damage to businesses and infrastructure. The once thriving economy of Maputo has taken a major hit, leaving many struggling to make ends meet. Rofino is just one of the many individuals who have been affected by the unrest.

In addition to the physical and financial toll, the ongoing protests have also taken a toll on the mental health of the people of Mozambique. The constant state of tension and fear has left many feeling anxious and overwhelmed. Rofino shared, “I have been driving in Maputo for many years, and I have never seen such chaos and violence. It’s heartbreaking to see my country in this state.”

But despite the challenges, Rofino remains hopeful for the future of Mozambique. He believes that the protests will eventually come to an end and the country will once again be able to rebuild and thrive. “We are a resilient people, and we have been through tough times before. I have faith that we will overcome this and emerge stronger,” he said with determination.

In the midst of all the chaos, Rofino has also witnessed acts of kindness and unity. He shared, “During these difficult times, I have seen people coming together to help each other. It gives me hope that we can overcome any challenge if we stand together.”

Rofino’s sentiments are echoed by many others in Mozambique who are determined to not let the protests bring them down. They are determined to continue living their lives and working towards a better future for their country.

As an Uber driver, Rofino has had the opportunity to interact with people from all walks of life. He has seen the impact of the protests on his passengers, who are also struggling to navigate through the chaos. But he remains positive and determined to provide the best service he can, even in the face of adversity.

In conclusion, the ongoing post-election protests in Mozambique have not only affected the physical and economic landscape of the country but have also taken a toll on the mental well-being of its people. But amidst all the chaos and destruction, there is still hope and resilience. Rofino and many others like him are determined to overcome these challenges and work towards a brighter future for Mozambique. Let us stand in solidarity with them and support them in any way we can. Together, we can overcome any obstacle and emerge stronger.
