Saul Nassé presents first Archive Service Accreditation certificate

September 29, 2024
in Breaking News

Our Chief Executive and Keeper, Saul Nassé, has recently presented his first Archive Service Accreditation certificate since joining The National Archives in the summer. This is a significant achievement for both Saul and the accredited archive service, Westminster City Archives, which is the local authority archive for the City of Westminster. The service has now gained full accreditation for the second time, demonstrating their continued commitment to preserving and providing access to historical records.

The Archive Service Accreditation is a UK-wide quality standard that recognises good archive practice and sets a benchmark for the management and operation of archive services. The National Archives is responsible for overseeing the accreditation process and works closely with archive services to support them in meeting the required standards.

Saul presented the certificate to Westminster City Archives on 10th September 2020, in a small ceremony attended by staff from both The National Archives and the archive service. This was a proud moment for both Saul and the team at Westminster City Archives, who have worked tirelessly to maintain their high standards and secure accreditation once again.

In his speech, Saul praised the dedication and hard work of the staff at Westminster City Archives, stating that their commitment to preserving and making accessible the rich history of the City of Westminster is truly commendable. He also highlighted the importance of accredited archive services in ensuring that our nation’s heritage is safeguarded for future generations.

Westminster City Archives first gained accreditation in 2013 and has since continued to meet the rigorous standards set by the Archive Service Accreditation panel. This is a testament to their ongoing efforts to improve and develop their services, as well as their dedication to providing the best possible experience for researchers and visitors.

The accreditation process involves a thorough assessment of the archive service’s policies, procedures, and facilities. This includes areas such as collection care, public engagement, and digital preservation. The National Archives also takes into account feedback from users of the service, ensuring that the needs and expectations of the community are met.

Accreditation is not a one-time achievement, but an ongoing process that requires constant evaluation and improvement. This is why accredited archive services must reapply for accreditation every five years, demonstrating their continued commitment to maintaining high standards.

Westminster City Archives has not only met the standards set by the Archive Service Accreditation panel but has also exceeded them in many areas. Their innovative outreach programs, engaging exhibitions, and impressive digitisation projects have all contributed to their success in gaining full accreditation for the second time.

The National Archives is proud to have Westminster City Archives as an accredited archive service and commends them for their dedication to preserving and sharing the history of the City of Westminster. The service plays a crucial role in promoting understanding and appreciation of our past, and their commitment to excellence is truly commendable.

The presentation of the Archive Service Accreditation certificate to Westminster City Archives is a proud moment for both Saul Nassé and The National Archives. It is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the staff at Westminster City Archives, who have once again proven their commitment to preserving and providing access to historical records.

As we move towards a more digital age, the role of accredited archive services becomes even more crucial in safeguarding our nation’s heritage. The National Archives is committed to supporting and promoting the work of accredited archive services, and we congratulate Westminster City Archives on this significant achievement.

In conclusion, the presentation of the Archive Service Accreditation certificate to Westminster City Archives is a proud moment for all involved. It is a testament to the dedication and hard work of the staff at the archive service and highlights the importance of accredited archive services in preserving our nation’s history. The National Archives looks forward to continuing to work with Westminster City Archives and other accredited archive services in the future, as we strive to safeguard our heritage for generations to come.
