Hungary echoes Trump call as it assumes European Union presidency

July 1, 2024
in Europe

Viktor Orban-led Hungary has been making headlines as it prepares to take on the European Union presidency on Monday. With a clear ambition to “Make Europe Great Again,” Hungary seems to have taken a page out of US President Donald Trump’s book.

As the country gears up to lead the EU for the next six months, many are wondering what this could mean for the future of Europe. With Orban at the helm, some fear that Hungary’s nationalist and anti-immigration policies will be reflected in the EU’s decisions. However, others see this as an opportunity for Hungary to make a positive impact and bring about much-needed change in the EU.

Orban, who has been in power since 2010, has been known for his fierce opposition to immigration and his strong stance against the EU’s refugee resettlement plan. During his campaign for re-election earlier this year, he vowed to “defend Hungary’s Christian culture” and criticized the EU for its handling of the migrant crisis. Now, as Hungary assumes the EU presidency, many are wondering if Orban will stay true to his promises and push for a more conservative and nationalistic agenda within the EU.

But while some may see this as a cause for concern, others see it as an opportunity for Hungary to bring about positive change in the EU. With Orban’s strong leadership and determination, Hungary has the potential to be a strong and influential voice within the EU. And as the country takes on the presidency, it has already outlined its key priorities, which include strengthening the EU’s external borders, promoting economic growth and fighting against terrorism.

One of the main challenges that Hungary will face during its presidency is the ongoing Brexit negotiations. With the deadline for the UK’s departure from the EU fast approaching, it will be up to Hungary to play a key role in ensuring a smooth transition for both the UK and the EU. This will require strong leadership and the ability to bring all member states together to find a solution that works for everyone.

In addition to Brexit, Hungary also plans to focus on strengthening the EU’s external borders. With the rise of terrorism and the ongoing refugee crisis, this has become a pressing issue for the EU. Hungary, being a country that has been greatly impacted by the influx of migrants, is well-equipped to lead the charge in finding a solution to this problem. By working closely with other member states and implementing effective border control measures, Hungary can help create a safer and more secure Europe.

Another key priority for Hungary during its presidency is promoting economic growth within the EU. With the recent economic downturn and the looming threat of a trade war with the US, the EU is in desperate need of strong economic policies. Hungary, with its thriving economy and strong business sector, has the potential to lead the way in this area. By promoting trade and investment and implementing policies that support small and medium-sized enterprises, Hungary can help stimulate economic growth and create more opportunities for all member states.

Hungary’s presidency also comes at a crucial time for the EU’s future. With the rise of nationalist and populist movements throughout Europe, many are questioning the unity and strength of the EU. As a country that has been at the center of these debates, Hungary has the opportunity to prove that the EU can still be a powerful force for good. By promoting a message of unity and working closely with all member states, Hungary can help solidify the EU as a strong and united bloc.

As Hungary takes on the EU presidency, it is clear that it has big shoes to fill. But with Orban at the helm and a clear vision for the future, the country has the potential to make a lasting impact on the EU and the world. While some may doubt its intentions, Hungary has a chance to prove itself as a strong and influential leader within the EU. And with its motto of “Making Europe Great Again,” Hungary has the opportunity to inspire change and create a better future for all member states.
