Maldives to bar Israelis from entering country over Gaza war

June 6, 2024
in Asia

The Maldives, known for its crystal-clear waters and sandy beaches, has recently made headlines for a controversial decision to bar Israeli citizens from entering the island nation. This announcement came as a result of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine in the Gaza strip, with the Maldives’ President Dr Mohamed Muizzu taking a stand against the violence.

In a press release, President Muizzu stated that he had received a recommendation from the Maldives’ Ministry of Foreign Affairs to restrict entry for Israeli citizens, barring them from obtaining tourist visas or entering the country without a special permit. The move has received widespread support from citizens of the Maldives, who have spoken out against the atrocities being committed in Gaza.

The decision to bar Israeli citizens is a strong statement from the Maldivian government, expressing solidarity with the Palestinian people and standing against the actions of the Israeli government. This move is not the first of its kind, as many countries have taken similar measures in the past to protest against Israeli actions in Gaza. However, this decision holds even more significance as the Maldives is a small island nation with a population of just over half a million, making it a relatively small player on the global stage.

The conflict in Gaza has been ongoing for decades, with the latest outbreak of violence starting in May 2021. This has resulted in the loss of hundreds of innocent lives, including women and children, and has caused widespread destruction in the region. The international community has condemned Israel for its excessive use of force and violation of human rights, as well as called for an immediate end to the conflict. The Maldives, as a peaceful nation, has also joined this call for peace and justice.

The Maldives and Israel have had a diplomatic relationship since 1965, and the Maldives has been a strong advocate for the recognition of Palestine as an independent state. In 1986, the Maldives played a crucial role in helping Palestine gain membership in the United Nations and has continuously supported the Palestinian cause at various international forums. Therefore, this decision to bar Israeli citizens is not just a knee-jerk reaction to the ongoing conflict, but a culmination of years of unwavering support for Palestine.

The Maldives is a nation that values peace and human rights above all else. As a small country reliant on tourism, the decision to restrict the entry of Israeli tourists may have an economic impact. However, the government’s stance is clear – human lives and values hold more importance than economic gains. This bold move has garnered praise from not only the Maldivian citizens but also from people around the world who stand in solidarity with Palestine.

The Maldives has always been a tourist hotspot, with its picturesque islands and luxurious resorts attracting millions of visitors each year. By restricting the entry of Israeli citizens, the government is sending a strong message to the international community that their values and principles are not for sale. It also serves as a reminder that the tourism industry should not overlook or ignore human rights issues, and steps should be taken to ensure ethical and responsible tourism.

The decision to bar Israeli citizens has also sparked discussions in the Maldives about creating a blacklist of countries whose citizens are not welcome in the island nation due to human rights violations. This could serve as a powerful tool to put pressure on governments that turn a blind eye to the suffering of innocent people.

In conclusion, the Maldives’ decision to bar Israeli citizens is a brave and noble move that reflects the country’s values and stands in solidarity with the suffering people of Palestine. It sends a strong message to the international community that the Maldives will not shy away from taking a stand against injustice and will use its position to advocate for peace and human rights. This decision has gained widespread support and admiration and serves as a reminder to all of us that even the smallest voice can make a big impact.
