Twelve localities in Moxico receive electricity from solar power sources

As part of the Angola 2025 Plan, initiated by the Angolan government to increase the electrification rate using environmentally sustainable energy sources, over one million people in 60 communes of Angola will benefit from public grid electricity.

In line with Angola’s electrification process, a ceremony for the signing and laying of the foundation stone for the Moxico Province Rural Electrification Project took place on Thursday afternoon, November 16, in the Municipality of Luau. The event, held in Luau, was presided over by the Minister of Energy and Water, accompanied by the provincial Governor, Ernesto Muangala, and the ambassadors of Portugal, Francisco Alegre, and Germany, Stefan Traumann. The event also saw the participation of senior energy sector officials, including representatives from DNNER, PRODE, ENDE, and the project’s patron, the renowned musician Matias Damásio.

Following the signing ceremony and laying of the foundation stone, a contract was signed between the public company PRODEL, representing the Angolan state as the project owner, and the Portuguese Group MCA, acting as the main contractor.

Minister João Baptista Borges highlighted that this project is one of President João Lourenço’s priorities, aiming to ensure access to electricity for thousands of families in remote areas of the country, thus fostering economic and social development in these regions.

The project involves the design and development of engineering works, construction of hybrid systems for photovoltaic generation with lithium-ion battery storage, and the expansion of the electrical grid with new distribution networks across 12 localities. This effort will enable the country to have cleaner and more affordable energy, with plans to connect approximately 59,000 households via prepaid systems, benefiting more than 370,000 people.

In Luau, the project aims to benefit about 59,370 people. A photovoltaic park with 55,500 solar panels and a production capacity of 58 MWp will be constructed.

The Luau Rural Electrification Project has a budget exceeding €1,027,587,914.00, with completion expected within three years (36 months) from the contract signing date.

At the end of the event, the minister visited the municipality of Luena to assess the progress of the city’s photovoltaic park implementation, which is 95% physically complete and will have a capacity of 26.906 MWdc. João Baptista Borges João Baptista Borges
