Jonathan Turley: Trump’s New York Hush Money Case Is ‘Absurd’

Fox News legal analyst Jonathan Turley has recently expressed his opinion on the ongoing trial of former President Donald Trump in New York. According to Turley, the case against Trump for allegedly falsifying business records related to payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels is “absurd.”

In an interview on Fox News Channel’s “America’s Newsroom,” Turley stated that the charges against Trump are “weak” and “unsubstantiated.” He also pointed out that the case is based on a law that has rarely been used in the past and is being applied in a way that is not consistent with its original purpose.

Turley, who is a professor at George Washington University Law School, further explained that the law in question, known as the Martin Act, was originally intended to protect investors from fraud. However, in this case, it is being used to target Trump’s personal business dealings, which Turley believes is a misuse of the law.

The charges against Trump stem from the $130,000 payment made to Daniels in 2016, allegedly to keep her from speaking out about her alleged affair with Trump. The payment was made by Trump’s former lawyer, Michael Cohen, and was later reimbursed by Trump himself. The prosecution argues that this payment was made to influence the outcome of the 2016 presidential election and therefore constitutes a violation of the Martin Act.

However, Turley argues that there is no evidence to suggest that the payment was made for the purpose of influencing the election. He also points out that the payment was made with Trump’s own personal funds, not campaign funds, which further weakens the prosecution’s case.

Turley’s comments have sparked a debate among legal experts and commentators, with many agreeing that the charges against Trump are weak and politically motivated. Some have even gone as far as to call it a “witch hunt” against the former president.

This is not the first time that Trump has faced legal challenges during his presidency. He was also impeached twice by the House of Representatives, but was ultimately acquitted by the Senate both times. Many believe that the New York trial is just another attempt to discredit Trump and undermine his legacy.

Despite the ongoing legal battles, Trump remains a popular figure among his supporters. He has a strong base of loyal followers who believe in his policies and leadership. They see the charges against him as a political attack and continue to stand by him.

As for Turley, he has been a vocal critic of Trump in the past, but his recent comments show that he is not afraid to speak out against what he believes is an injustice. He has also been critical of the way the media has portrayed the case, saying that they have been quick to jump to conclusions without considering all the facts.

In conclusion, the ongoing trial of Donald Trump in New York has sparked a heated debate among legal experts and the public. While the prosecution argues that the former president violated the Martin Act, many, including legal analyst Jonathan Turley, believe that the charges are weak and politically motivated. Only time will tell how the trial will unfold, but one thing is for sure – the outcome will have a significant impact on the political landscape of the United States.
