Biden urges China’s Xi to preserve ‘peace and stability’ on Taiwan

April 3, 2024
in Asia

U.S. President Joe Biden recently reached out to Chinese President Xi Jinping, calling on him to maintain a peaceful atmosphere around Taiwan as the country prepares to inaugurate a new leader. The two leaders had a productive phone call, where Biden emphasized the importance of preserving stability in the region and promoting peaceful dialogue.

In the past few years, tensions between China and Taiwan have been on the rise, with China claiming Taiwan as a part of its territory and Taiwan asserting its independence. This has led to increased military activities and political posturing, causing concern among neighboring countries and the international community.

In light of these developments, President Biden’s call for calm and stability is a much-needed step towards de-escalating tensions and promoting peaceful coexistence. The United States has a long-standing commitment to Taiwan’s security and has been a vocal supporter of its democracy and sovereignty. However, Biden’s approach to the issue differs from his predecessor’s, as he seeks to engage in constructive dialogue rather than confrontational rhetoric.

During the phone call, President Biden emphasized the need for both the United States and China to work together to address global challenges, such as the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and climate change. He also stressed the importance of maintaining open communication channels between the two countries to prevent any misunderstandings or miscalculations.

President Xi Jinping, in response, acknowledged the importance of the U.S.-China relationship and expressed his willingness to work with the United States to promote peace and stability in the region. He also reiterated China’s commitment to the One-China policy, which recognizes Taiwan as a part of China.

The call between the two leaders comes at a crucial time for Taiwan, as the country prepares to inaugurate its new president, Tsai Ing-wen. Tsai, who was re-elected in a landslide victory last year, has been a vocal advocate for Taiwan’s independence and has faced criticism from China for her pro-democracy stance.

President Biden’s call for calm and stability around Taiwan is a positive step towards promoting peaceful relations between the two countries. It also sends a clear message to China that the United States will continue to support Taiwan’s democracy and sovereignty.

The United States has a long history of standing up for democratic values and human rights, and this call to President Xi Jinping is a reaffirmation of that commitment. It also highlights the importance of the U.S.-China relationship and the need for both countries to work together to address global challenges.

The phone call between President Biden and President Xi Jinping is a significant development in the U.S.-China relationship, which has been strained in recent years. It shows a willingness from both leaders to engage in constructive dialogue and find common ground, rather than resorting to aggressive rhetoric and actions.

As the world continues to grapple with the ongoing pandemic and other pressing issues, it is crucial for countries to work together and maintain peaceful relations. President Biden’s call for calm and stability around Taiwan is a step in the right direction and sets a positive tone for future interactions between the United States and China.

In conclusion, President Biden’s call to President Xi Jinping to preserve the calm atmosphere around Taiwan is a positive and necessary move towards promoting peace and stability in the region. It highlights the importance of open communication and cooperation between the two countries and sets a positive tone for future relations. As the world looks towards a post-pandemic future, it is crucial for countries to work together and find common ground, and this call is a step in the right direction.
