Ex-Pakistani PM Khan arbitrarily detained: UN

July 1, 2024
in Asia

Former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, is a symbol of hope and change in his country. He rose to power on a platform of anti-corruption and promised to bring justice and equality for all citizens. However, it seems that his political opponents are not ready to accept this change and are resorting to extreme measures to silence him. The latest development in this ongoing struggle for justice is the arbitrary imprisonment of Imran Khan, in clear violation of international law.

On Monday, the United Nations human rights working group issued a statement condemning the imprisonment of Imran Khan and demanded his immediate release. The group, based in Geneva, stated that the arrest and detention of the former Prime Minister is a clear violation of international law and goes against the principles of fairness and due process. They also expressed concern for Khan’s health and well-being while in custody.

The U.N. working group’s statement came after a thorough examination of the case, which included consultations with the Pakistani government and Imran Khan’s legal team. The group’s findings, based on international standards and norms, concluded that Imran Khan’s arrest and imprisonment were arbitrary and lacked any legal basis. This finding is a significant blow to the Pakistani government, who has denied any wrongdoing in the case.

Ever since his arrest in November last year, Imran Khan has been kept in solitary confinement without access to legal counsel or proper medical care. This is a gross violation of his basic human rights and has raised serious concerns about his safety and well-being. The former Prime Minister has been denied a fair trial, and his family and supporters have been barred from visiting him in prison. Such treatment of a prominent political leader is a clear indication of the government’s attempt to suppress dissent and silence any opposition.

The international community has also expressed its concern over the arbitrary imprisonment of Imran Khan. Human rights organizations, activists, and politicians from around the world have condemned the unjust treatment of the former Prime Minister and called for his immediate release. The U.N. working group’s statement adds to the growing chorus of voices demanding justice for Imran Khan and an end to the unlawful detention.

The government of Pakistan has a duty to uphold the rule of law and protect the fundamental rights of its citizens. The imprisonment of Imran Khan not only goes against international law but also undermines the democratic values of the country. It is essential for the government to ensure that Imran Khan receives a fair trial and is not subject to any form of torture or mistreatment during his detention. The continued detention of a political leader without sufficient evidence is a violation of the country’s constitution and the principles of justice.

The statement by the U.N. working group also highlights the need for Pakistan to review its laws and procedures to ensure compliance with international human rights standards. The arbitrary detention of individuals for political reasons is a serious violation of their rights and is a cause of concern for the international community. The Pakistani government must take immediate steps to rectify this situation and uphold the rule of law.

Imran Khan has been an advocate for human rights and justice throughout his political career. His unwavering commitment to the betterment of his country and its people is commendable and should not be silenced. The international community must continue to support his cause and demand his release. We urge the Pakistani government to heed the call of the U.N. working group and take immediate action to release Imran Khan and ensure that he receives a fair trial.

In conclusion, the arbitrary imprisonment of Imran Khan is a blatant violation of international law and a threat to the democratic values of Pakistan. The U.N. working group’s statement is a wake-up call for the government to uphold the rule of law and protect the rights of its citizens. The international community must continue to stand in solidarity with Imran Khan and demand his immediate release. It is time for justice to prevail and for Pakistan to uphold its commitment to human rights and justice.
