Sudan’s warring parties using starvation as weapon: UN experts

July 1, 2024
in Africa

Independent United Nations experts have spoken out against the use of starvation as a weapon of war in Sudan, while a non-governmental organization (NGO) has issued a warning about the dire situation facing up to three million people in the country.

The ongoing conflict in Sudan has resulted in widespread displacement, destruction of infrastructure, and a severe humanitarian crisis. And now, it has been revealed that warring parties are deliberately using food as a tool to gain control and power.

According to the United Nations, the situation in Sudan is worsening day by day, with millions of people facing food insecurity and the threat of famine. The situation has been further exacerbated by the ongoing conflict between government forces and rebel groups.

The use of starvation as a weapon of war is a violation of international humanitarian law and a grave human rights abuse. It not only deprives civilians of their basic right to food, but it also has devastating consequences on their health and well-being. Children, in particular, are the most vulnerable in these situations, facing malnutrition and even death.

The independent UN experts have strongly condemned this tactic, stating that it is a clear violation of international law and must be stopped immediately. They have called on all parties involved in the conflict to adhere to their obligations under international law and ensure that civilians have access to food and other basic necessities.

The experts have also highlighted the need for accountability and justice for those responsible for using starvation as a weapon of war. It is essential to hold these perpetrators accountable for their actions and ensure that such acts are not repeated in the future.

Meanwhile, the NGO Save the Children has issued a warning that up to three million people in Sudan are at risk of starvation if urgent action is not taken. The organization has called for immediate humanitarian assistance and funding to reach the most vulnerable populations, especially children and women.

Save the Children has also urged all parties involved in the conflict to allow for safe and unhindered access to humanitarian aid, as well as to protect civilians from attacks and violence. Without this, the situation will only continue to deteriorate, and innocent lives will be lost.

The NGO has also highlighted the need for a long-term solution to the conflict in Sudan. A lasting peace agreement must be reached, and efforts must be made to address the root causes of the conflict and promote reconciliation and stability.

In light of these recent developments, it is crucial for the international community to step up and provide the necessary support and resources to address the humanitarian crisis in Sudan. The lives of millions of people are at stake, and we cannot afford to turn a blind eye to their suffering.

The United Nations and other humanitarian organizations are working tirelessly to provide aid and assistance to those in need, but they cannot do it alone. It is the responsibility of all nations to come together and support the people of Sudan in their time of need.

We must also remember that behind the numbers and statistics are real people, families, and children who are struggling to survive. They deserve our attention, compassion, and action.

In conclusion, the use of starvation as a weapon of war in Sudan is a grave violation of human rights and must be stopped immediately. The international community must work together to provide aid and support to those affected and push for a peaceful resolution to the conflict. Let us not forget the innocent lives at stake and take action to ensure a better future for the people of Sudan.
